Call for Entries: World of Antebellum America: A Daily Life Encyclopedia

Editor, Alexandra Kindell; Publisher, ABC-Clio

Recalling the old “Daily Life” series of books, ABC-Clio is making updated and easy-to-access social and cultural information available through its Daily Life Encyclopedia series. This edition will explore the lives of average people in the antebellum U.S. with a focus on social, cultural, and material history. This multivolume set includes ten categories, including entries on Food and Drink, Housing and Community, Recreation and Social Customs, Economics and Work, Fashion and Appearance, Science and Technology, Family and Gender, Religion and Beliefs, the Arts. Authors can use these topics to illuminate aspects of American emotional life, interactions, opinions, views, beliefs, and intimate relationships as well as connections between the individual and the greater world. The project is scheduled for completion in the next year, and is about two-thirds completed.

Below is a list of 500-1,000 word entries that are still currently available. Completion of entries by 31 December 2016 is preferable. The editor is looking for scholars willing to write on these topics or similar ones. Please feel free to make suggestions. If you are interested in participating in this series, please send an introduction email and CV to Alexandra Kindell at [email protected].
